From dynamic sports programs to captivating performing arts, including dance, drama, and music, along with a myriad of other enriching clubs and groups.
By participating in co-curricular offerings, our rangatahi find a platform to express themselves, build confidence, and create lasting connections with their peers. These opportunities also serve as a gateway for our students to interact with the broader school community.

Tutors will offer an individualised course for you based on your interests, or develop collaborative projects or learning towards competitions.

There is no charge for tutoring, only materials used. Materials will be gold sheeted to student’s accounts.

Gain a Barista qualification here at Rangi Ruru.
Available for Year 13 students (Year 12 students can join if places become available later in the year).
This certificate will be extremely useful for you in life beyond school.
During this course, you will learn the basic skills required to be a Barista, including coffee knowledge, making coffee, preparing milk, and milk art.
Four students at a time will be on an 8-hour course held in GC1 on Thursdays from 3:30pm – 5:00pm.
There will also be two Friday lunch slots where you will be required to make and serve to the staff in the GC1 café.
This course will be taken by a trained Barista from the Addington Coffee Co.
The cost is $150.00 which will be charged to your school account.

Committing to a regular writing practice can be tricky. This year, Rangi Ruru has you covered by offering two exciting options for those of you who wish to hone your writing skills but wish to commit at differing levels.
Option 1: Quick Lunchtime Writing Sessions
Where: E3
When: Tuesdays at lunchtime (it is advisable that you aim to bring a packed lunch to eat at this session).
What do these sessions entail? This option is for those of you who like to dabble in creative writing but might not have the time to commit to a weekly intensive hour session. In these sessions you will be given a variety of fun and engaging writing prompts to respond to. It is an informal group that enjoys writing, sharing ideas, and wants to connect with others.
These sessions are stand alone and are designed to be dipped in and out of. There is no requirement to sign up for these. If you are interested then feel free to drop in on a Tuesday lunchtime or message Mrs Bovett via ‘TEAMS’ chat.
Who are these sessions for? All students from Year 7 – 13.

Option 2: Rangi Ruru Writers’ Club
Where: E3
When: Tuesdays at lunchtime (it is advisable that you aim to bring a packed lunch to eat at this session).
What do these sessions entail? During these one-hour weekly sessions you will partake in writing in a range of genres from poetry to memoir, and craft some of your pieces towards publication. These sessions are designed to build on each other, so it is important to sign up for this club.
This group is for you if you want to take your writing to the next level, be involved in writers’ days out, access the latest competitions, and receive constructive criticism and advice about your writing. As part of the writing and crafting process you will be encouraged to share your work and actively seek (and give) feedback.
Who are these sessions for? All students from Year 7-13.

The Duke of Edinburgh is an Internationally recognized award. It has 3 levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Through this award, you will develop a wide range of key skills and dispositions essential for the future.
The programme helps develop your organizational skills and helps you learn to be more independent and resilient. There are four sections within each level: (1) Voluntary Service (2) Skills (3) Physical Recreation (4) Adventurous Journey. Participants design and plan their own award programme and set their own goals.
Participants are supported by the Student Head of Duke of Edinburgh and the Teacher in Charge of Duke of Edinburgh. There are regular meetings to help answer questions and support your planning of your programme.

The technology, innovation and entrepreneurship group allow you to explore your interests and learn all kinds of things related to technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. This group is part of the RangiX program.
We can explore, learn about and create essential technologies, like artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, drones, robotics, the Internet of things, 3D Design and Printing/Fabrication. Perhaps you will be part of Rangi’s first eSports team!
Or, perhaps you would like to learn to innovate, to find problems opportunities, create ideas that have value and transform those ideas into real solutions. You might try to solve a problem within our school to make it a better place, or take on a national or global problem.
You might want to learn about entrepreneurship and perhaps go on your own entrepreneurial journey. This doesn’t have to be a tech related business. For example, we have two young entrepreneurs starting a candle business, while others are exploring e-commerce. You might start your own business or just come along to learn more and develop some valuable skills.

We are the club for everyone!
The International Club provides an opportunity for our international and kiwi students to share and learn more about different cultures and to celebrate their own culture. Students from all levels are encouraged to join. Our activities are designed to encourage socialisation, and celebrate diversity, languages the experiences of other cultures. As well as celebrating the diversity of cultures within our school, students learn new global perspectives and develop their cultural competence skills which are needed to live and fully participate in a global world.
The International Club is a community of international and New Zealand students dedicated to:
- Promoting and enhancing international awareness, cooperation, cultural diversity and dialogue among students at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.
- Providing our school community with opportunities to learn about international students and their cultures through multicultural experiences.
- Promoting, advocating and advancing international campus initiatives in collaboration with the languages department, Sustainability or any other interested groups.
- We celebrate other cultures and their holidays with a focus on Asian, Spanish, and French-speaking countries.
- We do community service activities and service projects, and we go on cultural field trips.

SASH Club (Students Against Sexual Harassment)
The aim of SASH Club is to end sexual harassment and assault in schools and communities. It’s all about understanding what we can do to help reduce sexual harassment, and make people feel safer and supported.
SASH Club is inclusive and welcoming. It brings together students who share the goal of educating themselves and others about sexual harassment and assault, supporting survivors, and promoting change. SASH Club also offers resources that empower youth to protect themselves from sexual harassment and assault in their personal lives.

Help look after the library and promote books and reading to your fellow students!
- Juniors: returning and shelving books; attend junior bookclub (Thursday lunchtime) once a fortnight.
- Seniors: returning and shelving books, supervising junior team members; helping run a weekly junior bookclub; run the library socials; prepare library book display.
There is no cost associated with the student library team, and seniors will earn community service hours for their contribution.
All team members need to love reading, be comfortable finding your way around the library (or willing to learn), be friendly, positive, polite and enjoy helping students as well as having good spoken and written English and confident using technology.
This is an opportunity for students to learn how to communicate effectively with specific audiences. Students can work on a student’s news crew, make podcasts, learn journalism and communication skills to share their stories and ideas with a local, national or even international audience.

When: Meetings once a term, members are required to run chapel services according to the roster, workshops/training meetings as well.
Where: Chapel
Tech Angels members primarily help run the technical side of the chapel services in collaboration with senior leaders to operate microphones, PowerPoints and videos for chapels and assemblies throughout the year. However, they will also be given training to help other students and teachers with common issues in class. There will be morning teas where food will be provided, and badges will be given out once members have shown commitment.
There are no skills required- just commitment by coming to their allocated days or communicating when they are unable to attend. Anyone can join and you will be trained on the job, there is also no cost.

Welcome to the Rangi Ruru Robotics Club—an arena where innovation meets excitement! As part of the global VEX Robotics community in 22 countries, our club is open to students from Year 7 to Year 13. Dive into the world of robotics, engineering, and friendly competition.
At Rangi Ruru, students plan, engineer, and test their robot designs, preparing for VEX Scrimmages. These events unite schools across New Zealand, with our Canterbury community supporting participants through regular cross-school meetups. Guided by the DigiTech Department, students access space, tools, and expert assistance in our weekly build sessions. It’s more than building robots; it’s honing skills, improving performance, and having a blast with their peers.
Whether you’re a seasoned robotics enthusiast or a newcomer, all students are welcome to join anytime. The Robotics Club is about fostering a passion for robotics and creating enriching experiences.

Our student Whānau Komiti come together twice a term, or more frequently depending on the team! All students can share topics to discuss and suggest plans for activities that they would like to lead or support. In 2023 mahi included school wide celebrations of Matariki, Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori and supporting the school’s cultural narrative.
Our Head of Whānau leads the team which is open to all students in Years 7-13 who are passionate about Te Ao Māori, Mātauranga Māori and/or Te Reo Māori. The team is supported by Ms Herangi-Harrison and Mr Kimber.
Hui sometimes takes place during Wednesday Hui time along with before school (8:20am – 8:50am).

Young Enterprise is alive and well here at Rangi Ruru.
What is Young Enterprise (YE)?
Young Enterprise gives Year 12 and 13 students the opportunity to set up and run their own business for a year.
To be part of a YE team a student will, (with guidance from Mrs Griffith):
- Get together with 2 or 3 others to form a team. This team will become your company.
- Attend an intro session here at school, where the year’s program is presented, and team/company members decide who will take up what role (directorship).
- Participate in a Kickstart Day for all students in Canterbury – explain the year’s program in detail. This half-day session motivates and guides students on how to get started and how to develop a vision of your YE journey to come.
- Establish a relationship with a mentor (or go it alone!).
- Explore ideas for a product or service.
- Work through what will be needed – time, materials, target market, production, marketing.
- Estimate capital ($) required to get started.
- Set up a bank account (done here at school).
- Design a company logo and business card.
- Work together to produce and market your product.
This is a national competition and students are assessed in three ways:
- Complete a challenge each term to be submitted for points.
- June – prepare a Pitch to present to a panel of Dragons.
- End of Term 3 – prepare and submit an annual review – the story of your year. This is the final challenge and from here the 8 top teams will be selected to present a final Pitch to a Dragons’ Den – exciting! (One or more of these finalists will go to Wellington for the Nationals).

The club runs many fun activities – farm visits, guest speakers, university trips to learn about future careers in the agricultural sector, meetings, and competitions with other schools.

Whether you’re a seasoned farmer in the making or just starting to cultivate your interest in agriculture, the Young Farmers Club is open to all young akonga who are eager to learn, grow, and make a positive impact on the future of farming.

A group audition takes place at the beginning of the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for girls in year 9 and 10 to build their dance and choreography skills in a dance company that meets once a week before school to rehearse. Music sessions are mostly individual and for 30-minutes, held during the school day. Speech and drama sessions are usually in groups of two or three.
Once parents/caregivers have enrolled their daughter the ITM teacher will be in touch to organize the first day and time.
Most sessions start from Monday Feb 5th. They are held in the Music Department studios.
Costs: Parents/caregivers MUST enroll their daughter before they can start.
Costs are $39 per individual 30-minute session – these are Gold sheeted to parents at the end of each term.

Where: Music Department
Learn about playing chamber music as a team, prepare for workshops, masterclasses and enter the Chamber Music Contest. Chamber Music generally goes until mid-June, but for senior groups who make nationals, it continues until early August. There will be opportunities for junior students (particularly Years 7/8) who may not have entered the chamber music contest to form groups in the later part of the year, dependant on interest. You need to be able to play your instrument very well to a high level (Grade 6 or above) and be prepared to work really hard to learn to play together with self-discipline and direction.
Costs: Entry to Chamber Music Contest – usually $20pp. For those selected for National Finale, this year in Wellington, the estimated costs will be $500-$600 pp. Senior string/piano groups may travel to Wellington over King’s Birthday weekend for workshops with the New Zealand String Quartet – estimated cost $500 pp.

In Jazz Band you learn about playing jazz and improvising. Prepare for lots of gigs – at school, in the community – Christchurch Big Band Festival, ARA JazzQuest, cafes/bars/clubs, and prepare for competitions. Check out some performances here
You must be able to read music and must be learning your instrument for the entire year. Entry is via audition, or invitation. Open to saxophones, trumpets and trombones and bass guitar. There are no vacancies for a drummer, pianist, guitarist, or vocalist in 2024.
You must be able to commit to the Jazz Band for the entire year.
Costs: If there is travel to the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival in Blenheim during August, the cost is around $500 – $600pp. This is not guaranteed every year. Entry to ARA JazzQuest approx. $20pp

Rangi Sinfonia is for more advanced instrumentalists. The group enjoys rehearsing music together and preparing for performances, including prizegiving. There is a camp at the start of the year which is very social, where everyone really enjoys getting to know each other. Check out some performances here
Rangi Sinfonia is for all year groups – you must be able to read music and play your orchestral instrument to a minimum of Grade 4 level. An audition is required.
Advanced string players will be invited to play in a string orchestra, which will rehearse during the Sinfonia Tuesday after school rehearsal time, by arrangement.
You must be able to commit to Rangi Sinfonia for a full year.
Costs: Rangi Sinfonia Camp March 1st – 3rd at Living Springs approx. $300-$320.00 pp. Other costs will be minimal – around $20 – $40pp for entry to Aurora Festival and bus transport there and back.

Rangi Voices is for students in Years 7-10. The choir performs a wide variety of music, including contemporary and musical theatre songs, at school and community events, as well as in the annual national Big Sing Competition. Check out some performances here
Students need to enjoy singing together and learn about what it means to be a positive and contributing member of a choir. It is not necessary to have singing lessons or to be able to read music.
An audition is required – you will be asked to sing a verse of the National Anthem, Mrs Charlton will also check your vocal range.

You need to love to sing, be willing to work hard with a fantastic group of like-minded young wahine. An ability to read music and singing lessons are useful, but not essential. You do not need to have been in Rangi Voices.

Rock Bands are for students in Years 9 – 13 who have been learning their instrument/voice for at least a year
In rock bands you learn how to play live music using some of your favourite songs for a performance during the year. More advanced bands are encouraged to write their own songs so they can enter Rockquest. Be prepared to work hard and have a lot of fun whilst doing so. Check out some performances here

Drama Club is for all students and generally run once a week led by the student Head of Drama. Drama Club is a casual and fun club where anyone can come along and experience drama and improve their skills in a fun and friendly environment. Activities include script work, character creation, games and improvisation. Drama Club is open to everyone years 7-13 and weekly attendance is not required, but is recommended so you don’t miss anything.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School produce a senior production (for years 11, 12 and 13 students) and a junior production (for years 9 and 10 students) each year. We often collaborate with Christ’s College to do co-productions. In 2024 our Senior Production is the musical ‘Anything Goes’ with Christ’s College. We will do a Rangi Ruru only Junior Production in November. Information, with an overview of rehearsal times, will be given out at the first meeting of any production and parental consent is required. This is to ensure that parents are aware of the commitment needed. Information sent home regarding productions and events will include the relevant contact details.

Stage Angels focus on theatre technologies, such as lighting, sound and stage management, throughout the year one afternoon after school per week. You will get to learn how to rig, focus and operate lights for theatre. We will also look at sound technology for theatre including creating soundscapes, sound effects and using microphones for theatre. Being a part of Stage Angels can lead to opportunities to work as crew for productions and also to gain service hours working on school events outside of class time. Former Stage Angels work as technicians in the entertainment industry.

There are many benefits to doing theatre sports – it’s a great way to improve performance and confidence as well as speech and quick thinking there are lots of performance opportunities. Theatre Sports Club it is an opportunity to learn play improvisation games by playing them. Theatre sports in schools is an annual competition for improvised theatre held by the Court Theatre where school teams of up to six perform scenes in games based on audience suggestions scored by judging panel of the Court Jesters. Teams who progress through the heats are invited to participate in the grand final at the Court Theatre.

Adventure Racing is an exciting team sport that offers races ranging from 2 hours up to an exhilarating 12 hours. This thrilling pursuit combines various activities, including running, mountain biking, rogaine/orienteering, kayaking, navigation, and rock climbing/abseiling. Teams can typically consist of 2 to 4 participants, although the preferred setup features mixed-gender teams comprising of four racers.
Participating in Adventure Racing doesn’t require prior experience in the sport. All you need is a strong commitment, the ability to run and ride a bike, an appreciation for teamwork, and a passion for adventure and fitness challenges.
When: Adventure Racing is an event-based sport, predominately occurring in Terms 1, 3 & 4.
Training: Pre-event training sessions are scheduled throughout the year, taking place once a week on either a Tuesday afternoon (time TBC) or Wednesday night (.
Uniform: Competitors are required to wear the Rangi Ruru P.E top and P.E shorts during competitions. An optional Rangi Ruru Spandex kit ($45.00) is available for purchase from the Sports Office, and those participating in events must wear the Rangi Ruru Tracksuit, obtainable from the uniform shop at a cost of $187.49.
You will need your own mountain bike and helmet for some events.
Transport: Unless the Sports Office organizes transport for an event or team training, students are responsible for their transportation to/from events/trainings.
Cost: $40 per student per term, plus transport costs and event/rogaine series fees.

Athletics at Rangi is a mixture of different sporting events such as running (Sprints, Middle & Long Distance, Hurdles), jumping (Long Jump, Triple Jump), throwing (Discus, Shot Put, Hammer) and walking. You can choose up to four events to compete in for the Rangi Athletics Day and all other external events. Rangi Ruru has a running coach who can help you with a running programme/training. You can also consider training with a club outside of school.
When: Running training every Tuesday at 7:20am during term time (Term 1 – Term 4). Meet outside the Kerrs school gym.
Events: Year 9-13 School, Canterbury and South Island Champs in Term 1, National Champs in Term 4; Year 7-8 – School, CAIMS
Where: Nga Puna Wai Athletics track for our School Athletics day and Canterbury Champs and various other venues throughout New Zealand for South Island and National Champs.
Costs: Running Group is $40 per term per person. Costs associated with events are a Rangi athletics singlet, spikes (if required) entry fees and events costs. The school team is selected for the events, although participation is not mandatory.

Students have the option to engage in either social or competitive Basketball here at Rangi Ruru. Dive into the action by participating in Basketball trials for our competitive teams at the end of Term 1 (register for trials below).
When: Terms 2 & 3.
Competitions: The Senior A Basketball will compete in the Whelan Trophy competition which takes place on Tuesday evenings. ALL other Basketball teams (years 9-13) will compete in the School Sport Canterbury competition on Friday evenings. Additionally, both the Senior A and Junior A teams will attend a tournament during Winter Tournament Week.
Where: Home games are played at the Rangi Ruru Atawhai gym and away games are played at various school gyms in and around Christchurch.
Time: Games are played between 4pm-9.00pm and are 40 minutes in duration (20-minute halves).
Uniform:
- Senior A and Junior A: Issued a Basketball top and shorts at the start of the season.
- Senior B, Junior B & Social Teams: Need to purchase a Basketball singlet from the sports office at the start of the season and will wear Rangi Ruru P.E shorts.

3×3 Basketball is a summer sport for Year 7-13 students. This is a 5-week competition that starts on Thursday, 22 February and is open to all abilities.
What: 3X3 basketball is modified game of Basketball, played on half the court with a minimum of 3 players on the court at any time and a maximum of 5 players per team.
When: Thursdays from 3:45pm-5:00pm, Term 1 only
Where: Rangi Ruru Kerrs Gym.
Time: A 3v3 Basketball game will be 10 minutes duration.
Uniform: Players must wear the Rangi Ruru PE uniform (top and navy shorts) or wear a Rangi Ruru basketball singlet which can be purchased from the Sports office.
Cost: $20 per player and $87 to purchase a Basketball singlet (optional for this competition).

Where: North Hagley Park (School Cross Country & Canterbury Road Race) and Ascot Park (Canterbury Cross Country) and various other venues.
Cross country and Road Race running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain such as footpath, dirt, and/or grass.
You will need your own running shoes/spikes and you wear your PE uniform. The cost depends on which events you choose to enter, and the transport you take. You can attend running training at school on a Tuesday morning, or athletes may like to consider training with a club. School team will be selected after the school cross-country championships to attend Canterbury and the NZSS Champs.
Costs: Tuesday Running Group is $40 per term per person. Costs associated with events are a Rangi athletics singlet for Nationals, spikes (if required), entry fees and events costs. A school team is selected after our school cross country championships for the Canterbury Championships and Nationals.

When:
Term 1 – Friday wind-training sessions (starting mid-March). Start time is 7:00am.
Terms 2 and 3 – Wednesday afternoon racing, Tuesday and Friday wind-training sessions, weekend rides.
Note: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are core team sessions, where attendance is expected. Tuesday is an optional session targeted at those cyclists who want more opportunities to develop and do not have any clashes with other programmes/commitments. On occasion throughout the season, Sunday morning may be used for specific team trainings, especially in preparation for key events. Cyclists will be advised of the placement of these sessions well in advance.
Where: Rides leave from Rangi Ruru in Terms 2 & 3 and cycle to Tai Tapu for racing; weekend rides – venue and time TBC.
The School Cycling Competition involves three races:
- Individual Time Trials where you race as fast as you can against the clock.
- Team Time Trials where you race in a group of 3-4 riders (5 for nationals), against other teams.
- Graded Scratch where you race in a group of people at a similar level, with first over the finish line the winner
For training you train as a team to learn how to do team time trials.
You will need your own road bike, helmet and vest that MUST be worn for riding to and from Tai Tapu.
Costs: Term 1 ONLY: $40 per person. Terms 1-3: $120 per person plus additional costs for attending events and purchasing Rangi Ruru cycling gear.
No experience is needed and all levels will be catered for. Events include SKODA Southern Tour (Blenheim), SISS Road Cycling Champs and NZ Road Cycling Champs.

Where: Wednesday and Sunday Trainings at Owles Tce and SISS Dragon Boat Champs at Lake Hood.
Dragon Boating is where you race in a boat with paddlers, a drummer and a sweep person against other boats to cross the finish with the shortest time possible.
Years 9-13 only. Entry is dependent on numbers – max 12 per crew for a 10 boat and max 22 crew for a 20 boat. Students MUST be able to swim 50m. Term 1 consists of 5 weeks of training on Wednesdays and Sundays in prep for SISS Dragon Boat Champs at Lake Hood on Sunday 24th March 2023.
Cost: $80 per person Term 1 & $40 for Term 4, plus transport costs, and additional costs for events.
Minimum of 10 paddlers required.

You need your own mount for events, however not required for learn to ride sessions or polo. The cost will depend on the level of involvement. No experience is needed, newcomers are welcome.

Learn to Ride: Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school, all terms
Learn to ride sessions help teach students how to ride a horse, and how to care for them. Trained horses are provided, transport to and from school included.
Cost: Approximately $75 per week. Includes: coaching, horse hire, and transport. Must commit to a whole term.
Polo: Thursday after school, Term 1 & Term 4
If you can ride competently then you can sign up for polo lessons. These run for six weeks followed by an interschool tournament. Trained polo ponies and gear included, transport to and from school provided.
Cost: Approximately $95 per week, including transport. Must commit to a full term of 6 weeks. All can be selected for teams
Private and Group Coaching: afterschool, weekends and holidays
With a range of instructors for dressage and jumping, at various locations

The Rangi Ruru Golf Program caters to all skill levels, accommodating both beginners and advanced golfers. We have two main groups operating within the golf program which students can choose to participate in:
Option One: Golf lessons for beginners (Year 7-13) with Matt McDowell (Hagley Park Golf pro)
Option Two: Round of Golf for Experienced Golfers (Year 7-13) – Ideal for students with golf experience, potentially holding a handicap, who enjoy a round of golf. No coaching involved.
Yr 9-13 students can enter into Canterbury Secondary School, South Island Secondary School, and National Secondary School events during the year.
When: Wednesday afternoons, Terms 1 and 4.
Where: Hagley Golf Course.
Time: Golf Lessons (3:00-4:00pm), Round of Golf (3:00pm-4:30pm).
Uniform: Rangi Ruru P.E gear (top and navy shorts), appropriate footwear (gym shoes), sunhat and wet weather gear should the weather deteriorate.
Equipment: Golf clubs are provided for students participating in the lessons. Students participating in a round of gold MUST provide their own Golf clubs and carry bag.

Hockey at Rangi is played throughout Terms 2 and 3. Teams are selected via trials, but seniors can field a social team, should they wish to. Players need their own hockey stick, shin guards, navy socks, and a mouth guard. Where possible, all teams are provided with a playing uniform, but the Year 9 teams may be required to wear Rangi Ruru PE uniform, should we have more teams than uniforms.
Where: Trainings are held throughout the week on the Rangi turf either before school or after school. Games are played at Ngā Puna Wai, Nunweek Park, Rolleston or Marist Club (St Bede’s College). The 1st XI play Friday evenings; all other teams play Wednesday afternoons/evenings.
Trainings: 1st and 2nd XI teams – twice a week; All other teams – once a week.
Transport:
- Students can either make their own way to/from hockey games or there will be taxis/school vans offered to students who need transport.
- Students are to indicate via their individual TEAMS chat pages if they require transport each week.

The benefits of gaining a foundation in life-saving skills are significant and considered extremely worthwhile at Rangi Ruru. For this reason, a number of awards are offered.
Bronze Star – All girls complete their Bronze Star Award as part of the Year 9 curriculum. It serves as an introduction to Lifesaving to develop skills and knowledge of safe water rescue and survival.
Togs and towel are required.
BRONZE MEDALLION – Minimum age is 14 years or in the year in which you turn 14. Pre-requisites – The Bronze Star award is an advantage but not essential. All sessions will be in the Rangi swimming pool & the day/time TBC. Cost – badges only.

Metafit – 30 minutes of bodyweight only workouts consisting of a range of simple but effective exercises that are designed to get you fitter and stronger. This is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which is a functional/bodyweight method of exercising. It is a challenging session for all fitness levels.
Circuits – 30-45 minutes of circuit training using both bodyweight and machine-based exercises.
This is for all year levels. You will need a water bottle and school sports uniform. Meet Ms Joyce by the Fitness Centre.
Cost: $5 per session.

Mountain Biking is a form of cycling that typically takes place off-road, on rough terrain, and often involves navigating through challenging natural environments such as mountains, forests, and rough trails. The primary goal of the Rangi Ruru MTB program is to enhance riders skills, build their confidence, encourage them to ride according to their capabilities, and foster a genuine enjoyment of the sport.
We have two main groups that operate within the Rangi Ruru Mountain Biking program to help cater for a range of experience and ability. (see below)
Term 1 MTB Options:
- Canterbury Secondary Schools Singletracks Cross-Country (XC) MTB Series – A series of 5 races with the Canterbury Championships taking place in the fifth week (Wednesday, 27 March).
- Development Group – These are supervised MTB sessions that will take place at Halswell Quarry.
Term 4 MTB Options:
- School Sport Canterbury Downhill Racing – This is a 6-week downhill racing program run on Wednesday afternoons at the Christchurch Adventure Park.
- Development – These are supervised MTB sessions at either Halwell Quarry or the Christchurch Adventure Park.
Please note: Riders will also have the option to enter into Canterbury Secondary School, South Island Secondary School, and National Secondary School events during the year.
When: Wednesday afternoons, Terms 1 and 4
Time: 3:15pm-5:30pm
Venue: Can alternate between the Christchurch Adventure Park (CAP) and Halswell Quarry.
Uniform: Students are to wear the Rangi Ruru PE top and appropriate biking clothing/protective gear. Rangi Ruru Mountain Bike tops are also available to purchase from the Sports Office for $86.25 (optional).
Equipment: Riders MUST have their own Mountain Bike which is in sound mechanical condition and Helmet. Protective bike gear is recommended but optional (i.e elbow pads, gloves, neck brace and back protection).
Cost: $40 for a social rider (no competitions) per person per term plus transport costs OR approximately $70 for a competition rider per person per term, plus transport, plus other competitions.
Transport:
- Students can either make their own way to/from the MTB venue on Wednesdays and/or transport can be arranged.
- Students are to indicate via their individual TEAMS chat pages if they require transport each week.

Individuals and teams can enter these events.
You will need your own bike, helmet, wet suit/togs and Rangi Ruru sports uniform. Costs vary between $25-50 per person for each event. A Rangi Ruru Triathlon Suit can be purchased for approximately $270.

Year 9-13 Netball
When: Saturdays and/or Wednesday afternoons terms 3 and 4
Where: Nga Puna Wai Indoor Centre on Saturdays and various venues on Wednesdays
You will need a Rangi Ruru netball dress, available from the uniform shop, and navy shorts to wear underneath. Saturday (including Supernet/Wednesday netball) costs between $210-$280 and Wednesday only Netball $40 per person per term. Trials are held in term 1, socials teams do not need a trial. Saturday comp starts end of April and there will be games during the holidays.

Yr 9 “Just Play”: Wednesday 20 March (2.45-4.30pm), Thursday 21 March (3:30-5:30pm) and Saturday 23 March (9:00-12:00pm). All trials will be held on the Rangi Netball courts and Kerrs Gym.

Year 7/8 Netball
Information will be available in Term 2. Teams will play in the Tuesday CAIMS competition.

When: October-March, trainings in the morning and after school 5 times per week in terms 1 & 4
Where: Trainings at Kerrs Reach, Rangi Ruru and Regattas at Twizel. The Maadi Cup alternates between Twizel and Cambridge each year. Selection is required for the Maadi team.
A race is 2000m with up to 7 other crews in a race. In a boat there will be rowers and in some boats a coxswain.
Rowing is a sport which requires a large amount of commitment, Year 9’s are unable to row in term 1 but can join in term 4.
Cost: $5000 per season gold sheeted at $833.50 over 6 months plus additional costs if selected into the New Zealand National Secondary Schools Championships team (Maadi Cup).
Uniform: You will need the Rangi Rowing compulsory uniform and your own bike. For learn to row, Rangi PE gear is sufficient.

When: Rugby 1st XV (combined team with other schools) and is played on a Wednesday afternoon from 3.30pm-5.00pm in Terms 2 and 3. Rugby 7’s tournament is in Term 4.
Where: Rugby 1st XV trainings are held on the Rangi Ruru school field and games are played at Burnside Park each week on a Wednesday. The Sports Office is exploring the option of attending a rugby tournament during Winter Tournament Week in Term 3.
Rugby 7’s is tournament based at various venues in Christchurch and trainings are once a week on the Rangi field in Term 4. Nationals is in Tauranga in early December, and we must qualify to attend.
Commitment to all trainings is vital, particularly for new players to the sport so they can learn safe contact techniques.
Cost: For both rugby and rugby 7’s players must have their own boots, shorts, socks and mouth guard. Tops are provided. Rugby – $40 per person per term for Term 2 and 3 plus transport costs and tournament fees. Rugby 7s – $40 for Term 4 plus transport costs and tournament fees.

The “Tuesday Running Group” with Gabi Newman (Rangi Ruru Running Coach), is every Tuesday at 7.20am outside the Rangi Ruru gym. The sessions cover long distance (off site) and sprint training (onsite). Extra sessions can be organised for field events etc. Caters for beginners through to senior athletes.

Skiing and snowboarding are event-based sport options at Rangi. You will need to be a competent skier/snowboarder to sign up to enter the competitions on offer. Support is provided to attend the Canterbury Secondary School Snowsports events. Students who wish to compete at a South Island or National level for school will need to be entered through school and will need whānau support and supervision to attend.
Cost: Entry fees plus any transport organised through school.

Strength and conditioning sessions for our Senior A/ first teams will be confirmed after trials. The bellow options are for any students that would like to attend a circuit/speed class.
Morning Mahi: This is a circuit class every Friday morning from 7:35-8:15am in the Atawhai Fitness centre. Caters for all fitness levels. Cost: $5 per person per session. Runs in Term 1 and Term 4
Feed the Cats: These are speed and strength classes on a Tuesday and Thursday from 7:15-8:30am in the Atawhai Gym. Caters for all abilities. Cost: $5 per person per session
When: Various times all year round (Term 1-4)
Where: School fitness centre, Reid or Kerrs Gym and/or school field
A key focus of all strength & conditioning (S&C) sessions is injury prevention. Ensuring student athletes are physically prepared for the demands of the sport(s) they play is key in helping to minimise injury and maximise participation. While S&C sessions can be targeted at specific teams and codes, all students are able to attend. No specific uniform is required – but all students must wear sports shoes and have their own drink bottle.
Cost: Charged at the end of Term 1, Terms 2&3, Term 4, the cost is $5 per session attended.

Where: Sumner Beach – Corner of Stoke Street and The Esplanade
Time: 4:30-6:30pm
Transport: A bus will transport students to/from Sumner Beach departing Rossall Street Bus stop at 3:40pm and returning back to school at approx. 7:00pm. Students can also choose to make their own way to/from Sumner Beach.
Equipment: Participants will need togs, towel but a wetsuit and board are provided.
Cost: The cost is $162.50 for 5 lessons plus transport costs (bus hire) in Term 1. Term 4 will be a similar cost but won’t be confirmed until the end of Term 3.
Please note: This is designed as a “learn-to-surf” program. If you are interested in competing, please inform the sports office, and we will be happy to guide you.
This is a highly sought after sport and spots are limited so get in quick! Priority will be given to students in Year 9-13 over those in Year 7-8.

Cost: $5 per session
The Monday sessions are for non-club swimmers at any level. They focus on building endurance and improving style by using a variety of drills and skills. A minimum of 40 lengths is swum during the session. You will need your own togs, goggles and cap.
Events for competitive swimmers are throughout the year. Year 9-13 Swimmers who wish to enter school, Canterbury, SISS, NZSS Swimming Champs/NAGs can do so. Entry costs apply.

Year 9-13 Tennis
When: Games are on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:30pm in Terms 1 and Term 4
Coaching – Wednesday afternoons and/or Thursday mornings in Terms 1 and 4
Where: Rangi Ruru tennis courts and various venues in and around Christchurch.
Equipment: All players will need their own tennis racquet, balls are provided.
Rangi Tennis Programme:
Premier Team – This is our top tennis team which trains twice a week on Tuesday and Friday mornings, with Remi Feneon (Rangi Ruru tennis coach). Games are from 3.15pm-5pm at Wilding Park on Wednesday afternoons. Cost approximately $50 per person per term plus tournament fees/costs.
Competitive Tennis Teams (Year 9-13, Interclub level players) – Games from 3.15pm on Wednesday afternoons, at various venues in and around Christchurch. Teams will be put together based on try-outs. The top competitive team will make up the wider Premier Tennis Squad and train with the Premier team on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Other competitive teams can opt into weekly coaching to be held one afternoon a week, numbers dependant. Must wear Rangi Ruru PE uniform and subs are $40 per player per term plus transport costs.
Competitive level coaching is available on a Tuesday from 3:30-4:30pm on the Rangi Tennis Courts. Cost is $90 per session which will be split between the students who register. These sessions will be run by Remi Feneon (Rangi Ruru Tennis Coach) or one of his coaches.
Note – Players will be selected from the wider Premier Squad to represent Rangi at the various tennis tournaments held in terms 1 and 4.
Social Tennis Teams (Year 9-13) – Games from 3.15pm on Wednesday afternoons, at various venues in and around Christchurch. Students can submit their own team of up to 6 players, or teams will be put together from registrations. Must wear Rangi Ruru PE uniform and subs are $40 per player per term plus transport costs.
Learn to Play – Wednesday afternoon (3:00-4:00pm) coaching lessons on the Rangi Ruru courts with Remi Feneon (Rangi Ruru tennis coach) or one of his coaches. This is open to Year 9-13 students (all abilities) who want a group tennis lesson (no matches/competition). Cost is approximately $90 a lesson which will be split between the students who register (total of 6 group lessons).
Tennis Try-Out sessions are as below:
- Premier Squad ONLY (no social players): Friday, 2 February 7:15-8:30am on the Rangi Ruru tennis courts.
- Competitive players (no social players) need to attend the following session so we can confirm team selections: Wednesday, 7 February 2:45-4:00pm on the Rangi Ruru tennis courts.
Note – Social and learn to play tennis players do not need to attend the try-out sessions.

Year 9-13 Touch
When: Wednesday afternoons in Terms 1 and 4.
Where: Various fields in and around Christchurch.
Time: Senior social teams and all Junior teams usually play between 3:00-4:00pm while the Super Touch games are played between 4:00pm-5:30pm. The Super Touch team will also play in the Belfast Touch competition out at Sheldon Park and game times will be between 6:30-8:30pm.
Training: Training times vary for competitive teams and social teams can request to have team training’s.
Uniform:
- Super Touch and Junior Premier Touch teams: Will be issued a Touch top at the start of the season. Players will need to purchase Rangi Ruru spandex shorts from the Sports Office at a cost of $45. Super touch players will be required to play games in Touch Boots while it is optional but highly recommended for Junior Premier Touch players.
- Senior B and Social teams: Rangi Ruru PE uniform (P.E top and navy shorts), white socks and sports shoes for all games.
Transport:
- Students can either make their own way to/from Touch games or there will be taxis/school vans offered to students who need transport.

- Taxis will depart/return to Rhodes Street (outside the front of the boarding house) and the school van will depart/return to Rossall Street entrance (opposite hockey turf).

KiwiVolley is a modified game for Year 7-8 children which can be played indoors, on grass or the sand.
Canterbury Volleyball runs leagues in Term 1 and 4. This league combines both skills and games – perfect for those starting out in Volleyball.

Where: Trainings – Rangi Ruru School pool, either before or after school; Games – Jellie Park and/or Taiora QEII
No experience needed but a good swimming ability is a big advantage.
Players will need their own togs and swimming cap. Water polo caps and balls are provided.
The Senior A team will attend a SISS and national tournament in Term 1. In Term 4, the junior team may attend a SISS Junior tournament. Additional costs are involved in attending tournaments.
Cost: $100 per person per term, plus pool entry and transport costs. Rangi Ruru Water Polo Togs are available to purchase from the Sports Office for $110 (compulsory for attending tournaments).

What: Our yoga classes will combine movement to increase flexibility and strength, with relaxation and breathwork to foster wellbeing. Your instructor is Tania who is an experienced instructor who is currently teaching in schools and sport organisations in Christchurch.
When: Thursday morning between 7.30-8.15am.
Where: Room R2 at school (Rossall Street building).
Cost: $12.50 per session and runs all year (Terms 1-4). There are approximately 8 sessions per term.
