Co-curricular activities play an instrumental part in our rangatahi’s personal development. We offer an exceptional range of sporting, performing arts, and other opportunities to our students, ensuring they can discover and explore their interests.

Art Club

Would you like to develop your art making skills while having fun and making friends? Come along and get tips to improve your drawing, painting, printmaking, or photography.

Lead by: Harriette Jolly

Located: Art Club is located in X13, upstairs in the Art Department

Tutors will develop an individualised course for you based on your interests.

The sessions run from after school until 4.30pm on Thursday, Terms 1, 2 and 3. We do not have Art Club on the last day of the term.

You are welcome to bring friends and attend on a regular or casual basis.

There is no charge for tutoring, only materials used. These can be charged to gold sheeted to student’s accounts.

Barista

Gain a Barista qualification here at Rangi Ruru.

Available for Year 13 students (Yr 12 students can join if places become available later in the year).

This certificate will be extremely useful for you in life beyond school.

During this course you will learn the basic skills required to be a Barista, including coffee knowledge, making coffee, preparing milk and milk art.

Four students at a time will be on an 8 hour course held in GC1 on Thursdays from 3:30pm – 5:00pm.

There will also be two Friday lunch slots where you will be required to make and serve to the staff in the GC1 café.

This course will be taken by a trained Barista from the Addington Coffee Co.

The cost is $150.00 which will be charged to your gold sheet to your school account.

There are two courses per term.

Creative Writing

Committing to a regular writing practice can be tricky. This year, Rangi Ruru has you covered by offering two exciting options for those of you who wish to hone your writing skills but wishing to commit at differing levels.

Option 1:  Quick Lunchtime Writing Sessions
Where: E3
When: Tuesdays at lunchtime (it is advisable that you aim to bring a packed lunch to eat at this session).
What do these sessions entail? This option is for those of you who like to dabble in creative writing but might not have the time to commit to a weekly intensive hour session.  In these sessions you will be given a variety of fun and engaging writing prompts to respond to.  It is an informal group that enjoys writing, sharing ideas, and wants to connect with others.

These sessions are stand alone and are designed to be dipped in and out of.  There is no requirement to sign up for these. If you are interested then feel free to drop in on a Tuesday lunchtime or message Mrs Bovett via ‘TEAMS’ chat.

Who are these sessions for? All students from Year 7 – 13.

Option 2: Rangi Ruru Writers’ Club
Where: E3
When: Tuesdays after school from 3:30-4:30
What do these sessions entail? During these one-hour weekly sessions you will partake in writing in a range of genres from poetry to memoir, and craft some of your pieces towards publication.  These sessions are designed to build on each other, so it is important to sign up for this club.

This group is for you if you want to take your writing to the next level, be involved in writers’ days out, access the latest competitions, and receive constructive criticism and advice about your writing. As part of the writing and crafting process you will be encouraged to share your work and actively seek (and give) feedback.

Who are these sessions for? All students from Year 7-13.

Debating

When: Thursdays after school (Terms 1, 2 and 3).

Where: E5 and St Andrews’ College

  • Available to students in year 9-13.
  • Students will compete in six inter-school debates, spread across Terms 1-3, and receive coaching.
  • Teams compete in different experience levels: Novice, Junior (9 & 10) and Senior (11, 12 and 13).
  • There are also opportunities to compete in regional competitions throughout the year.

Duke of Edinburgh

When: Two meetings a term

Where: HKFC

The Duke of Edinburgh is an Internationally recognized award. It has 3 levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Through this award, you will develop a wide range of key skills and dispositions essential for the future.

The programme helps develop your organizational skills and helps you learn to be more independent and resilient. There are four sections within each level: (1) Voluntary Service (2) Skills (3) Physical Recreation (4) Adventurous Journey. Participants design and plan their own award programme and set their own goals.

Participants are supported by the Student Head of Duke of Edinburgh and the Teacher in Charge of Duke of Edinburgh. There are regular meetings to help answer questions and support your planning of your own programme.

Eco-Action Nursery Team

We invite you to join us and students from other schools to grow and plant native forest in Ōtautahi Christchurch, to provide food for native birds and to help mitigate against climate change.

Join our wonderful team of energetic environmentalist and have fun caring for the planet. Make friends and meet students from other schools in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Get involved in our four annual planting out Sunday morning event’s.

We meet at the Rangi Ruru nursery (located at the end of the school field) or Christ’s College nursery (opposite the main entrance) on Tuesdays and Fridays afterschool for one hour to work together to grow native plants for the Red Zone.

No experience needed and all year levels welcome!

Leadership opportunities are also available after the competition of ten hours off service.

Then we need you!

Come and join our mighty team of fun, passionate, proactive, and inspired gardeners.

We work together to grow fruit and vegetables to support the wāhine and tamariki in need through Women’s Refuge.

We meet in our ‘happy place’, the school nursery, most Monday’s afterschool.

No experience needed, just an open mind and a love or interest in sustainable gardening.

All year levels welcome, so come and learn and/or share your expertise.

Environment Club

Join us in planting, growing and nurturing of our native species in Otautahi to provide food and shelter for our native birds as well as help mitigate climate change.

Bring your lunch then we will do things like weeding, planting, pricking out, watching enviro movies in winter, making lip balm and laundry detergent, or wax wraps or stuff for the green market, listening to guest speakers, entering competitions ect.

  • No experience is needed.
  • After 10 hours, become an eco-action warrior and earn a badge and Hi Vis.
  • Meet students from different schools.
  • Chat while earning volunteering hours after school sessions.
  • Be a part of something bigger than yourself.

When: Tuesday (Week A) lunchtimes at the Rangi Nursery (located end of the school field, behind the pool).

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group

The technology, innovation and entrepreneurship group allow you to explore your interests and learn all kinds of things related to technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. This group is part of the RangiX program.

We can explore, learn about and create essential technologies, like artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, drones, robotics, the Internet of things, 3D Design and Printing/Fabrication. Perhaps you will be part of Rangi’s first eSports team!

Or, perhaps you would like to learn to innovate, to find problems opportunities, create ideas that have value and transform those ideas into real solutions. You might try to solve a problem within our school to make it a better place, or take on a national or global problem.

You might want to learn about entrepreneurship and perhaps go on your own entrepreneurial journey. This doesn’t have to be a tech related business. For example, we have two young entrepreneurs starting a candle business, while others are exploring e-commerce. You might start your own business or just come along to learn more and develop some valuable skills.

International Club

We are the club for everyone!

The International Club provides an opportunity for our international and kiwi students to share and learn more about different cultures and to celebrate their own culture. Students from all levels are encouraged to join. Our activities are designed to encourage socialisation, and celebrate diversity, languages the experiences of other cultures. As well as celebrating the diversity of cultures within our school, students learn new global perspectives and develop their cultural competence skills which are needed to live and fully participate in a global world

The International Club is a community of international and New Zealand students dedicated to:

  • Promoting and enhancing international awareness, cooperation, cultural diversity and dialogue among students at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.
  • Providing our school community with opportunities to learn about international students and their cultures through multicultural experiences.
  • Promoting, advocating and advancing international campus initiatives in collaboration with the languages department, Sustainability or any other interested groups.
  • We celebrate other cultures and their holidays with a focus on Asian, Spanish and French-speaking countries.
  • We do community service activities and service projects, and we go on cultural field trips.

Some of our activities have included:

  • Activities with SMC/CC/STAC international clubs – quiz nights, Hanmer Springs day trip…
  • Mini-language lessons
  • International film showings
  • Food tastings
  • Presentations by students
  • Learning international songs and dances
  • Making crafts and decorations representing other countries

Kapa Haka

Nau mai haere mai ki te kapa o Rangi Ruru.

Anyone from years 7-13 is welcome to share in learning and performing a variety of kapa haka skills including long and short poi, action songs, haka and paatere. Whether you are a first timer or have experience. We practise weekly and are often involved in school events and mihi whakatau.

Philosophy

Philosophy Club is not about winning arguments, it’s about thinking carefully together.

We meet once a week and have discussions on social issues, philosophical ideas, and general topics. Although passionate discussions are fun, we aim to keep a safe and considerate environment.

You can contribute to discussions or just listen contentedly.

We meet every Thursday lunchtime, in W8 of Mana Wahine. All students are welcome (yr7-13).

Come and go as you please – the club is all about seeking and sharing ideas.

Rainbow Rangi

Rainbow Rangi is a group for LGBT people in our Rangi community, as well as their straight allies, to come together and discuss the issues in our communities and provide a place where everyone can feel included and accepted. Most sessions include baking and food to share.

Rainbow Rangi is open to all year groups and anyone whether you are apart of the LGBTQ+ community or just an ally. There is no cost associated with this club.

Student Library Team

When: 15 mins a week, either before or after school, or at lunchtime.

Where: Gibson Library

The student library team is a small team of students from years 11 – 13 who help look after the library before school, lunchtimes or after school and promote it as well as good books to fellow students. The duties can include helping with basic library functions such as checking out books and returns, shelving the books, running our Instagram page, planning events with students, recommending books to students, and recommending new books to purchase for the library.

There is no cost associated with the student library team, and you will earn community service hours for your work. You need to love reading, be comfortable finding your way around the library (or willing to learn), be friendly, positive and polite and enjoy helping students as well as having good spoken and written English and confident using technology.

Student Voice at Rangi

This is an opportunity for students to learn how to communicate effectively with specific audiences. Students can work on a student’s news crew, make podcasts, learn journalism and communication skills to share their stories and ideas with a local, national or even international audience.

Tech Angels

When: Meetings once a term, members are required to run chapel services according to the roster, workshops/training meetings as well.

Where: Chapel

Tech angels members primarily help run the technical side of the chapel services in collaboration with senior leaders and Dr Hastie to operate microphones, PowerPoints and videos for chapels and assemblies throughout the year. However, they will also be given training to help other students and teachers with common issues in class. There will be morning teas where food will be provided, and badges will be given out once members have shown commitment.

There are no skills required- just commitment by coming to their allocated days or communicating when they are unable to attend. Anyone can join and you will be trained on the job, there is also no cost.

Vex Robotics

VEX Robotics is an international robotics team sport running in 22 countries around the world. Students plan, engineer, and test designs that are then used to compete at VEX Scrimmages. It is open to all students from Year 7 – Year 13.

Many schools around NZ participate in the events and competitions every year, and especially Canterbury has a strong community of teachers, students, and volunteers who support school participants to build and practice together during the regular cross-school meetups. At Rangi Ruru, the DigiTech Dept offers the opportunity and helps students to navigate their learning and pathways into this growing area. We plan to run weekly build sessions to allow students to access the space and the assistance to build their robots and then to take them to the regular cross-school meetups to improve their robot performance, and most importantly to play with other school teams and to have fun.

The competition season is based on the international timeframe, beginning in April, and running through to March the following year.

Students new to VEX are welcome to join at any time during the year.

Whanau Komiti

He aha te mea nui tea o? He tangata he tangata, he tangata!

Nau mai haere mai ki tō mātou nei Whānau Komiti!

Our student Whānau Komiti come together twice a term. All students can share topics to discuss and suggest plans for activities that they would like to lead or support. In 2022 mahi included school wide celebrations of Matariki, Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori and supporting the school’s cultural narrative.

Our Head of Whānau leads the team which is open to all students in Years 7-13 who are passionate about Te Ao Māori, Mātauranga Māori and/or Te Reo Māori. The team is supported by Ms Herangi-Harrison and Mr Kimber.

Hui sometimes takes place during Wednesday Hui time along with before school (8:20am – 8:50am).

There is no cost associated with the Whānau Komiti.

Young Enterprise

Young Enterprise is alive and well here at Rangi Ruru.

What is Young Enterprise?

Young Enterprise gives Year 12 & 13 students the opportunity to set up and run their own business for a year.

To be part of a YE team a student will, (with guidance from Mrs Griffith):

  • Get together with 2 or 3 others to form a team. This team will become your company.
  • Attend an intro session here at school, where the year’s programme is presented and team/company members decide who will take up what role (directorship).
  • Participate in a Kickstart Day for all students in Canterbury – explains the year’s programme in detail. This half day session motivates and guides students on how to get started and how to develop a vision of your YE journey to come.
  • Establish a relationship with a mentor (or go it alone!)
  • Explore ideas for a product or service
  • Work through what will be needed – time, materials, target market, production, marketing.
  • Estimate capital ($) required to get started
  • Set up a bank account (done here at school).
  • Design a company logo and business card
  • Work together to produce and market your product.

This is a national competition and students are assessed in three ways:

  1. Complete a challenge each term to be submitted for points.
  2. June – prepare a Pitch to present to a panel of Dragons.
  3. End of Term 3 – prepare and submit an annual review – the story of your year. This is the final challenge and from here the 8 top teams will be selected to present a final Pitch to a Dragons’ Den – exciting! (One or more of these finalists will go to Wellington for the Nationals).

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has won many national awards and regional awards in recent years.

Young Farmers’ Club

The club is for everyone interested in the rural sector – anyone can join the club to gain more knowledge and have fun with a great group of like-minded individuals.

The club has been involved in many fun activities – farm visits, university trips to learn about future careers in the agricultural sector, meetings and competitions with other schools.

We value a commitment from you and a willingness to share and develop your skills and knowledge.

Dance – Elite Dance Company

This company is auditioned. The requirements of the choreography means only those students with experience and technical ability will be invited to be a part of the Elite Company. They will perform at Performing Arts Showcase, Evening of Dance, and Prize Giving and are part of the development and choreography for festivals. In 2023 The Elite Company will travel to the DanceNZMade National Festival in the north Island. This company also has the opportunity to work with top contemporary choreographers.

Dance audition sign up sheets will be on the Theatre Arts notice board in the Performing Arts Block, and information about joining/auditioning for dance clubs and companies will be in the notices.

Dance – Junior Dance Company

A group audition takes place at the beginning of the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for girls in year 9 and 10 to build their dance and choreography skills in a dance company that meets once a week before school to rehearse. This club will dance at DanceNZ Made and evening of dance in pieces choreographed by other dance students.

Dance – Senior Dance Company

This company is auditioned. The dancers will be involved in DaneNZMade, Performing Arts Showcase and Evening of Dance. Students are given the skills to help them further develop as dancers and the majority go on to become members of Elite Dance Company.

Dance – Years 7 & 8 Dance Club

An opportunity is given to students in Years 7 & 8 to be involved in a performance dance group. This is not auditioned and allows students with less experience in dance the chance to experience performance, composition and choreography.

ITM Music / ITM Speech and Drama

Available to all students in Years 7 – 13.

Music lessons are mostly individual 30-minute lessons, held during the school day. Speech and drama lessons are usually in groups of two or three.

Once parents/caregivers have enrolled their daughter the ITM teacher will be in touch to organize the first lesson day and time.

Most lessons start from Tuesday Feb 7. They are held in the Music Department studios.

Costs: Lessons are $36.25 per individual 30-minute lesson – these are Gold sheeted to parents at the end of each term. Other charges are listed on the information sheet – see link below. Parents/caregivers MUST enroll their daughter for lessons before they can start. Further information is available HERE in the Rangi Hub, and also in the 2023 January and February editions of Intouch.

Music – Chamber Music

When: To be arranged with group members

Where: Music Department

Learn about playing chamber music as a team, prepare for workshops, masterclasses and enter the Chamber Music Contest.  Chamber Music generally goes until mid-June, but for senior groups who make nationals, it continues until early August.  There will be opportunities for junior students (particularly Years 7/8) who may not have entered the chamber music contest to form groups in the later part of the year, dependant on interest.  Check out some performances here.

You need to be able to play your instrument very well to a high level (Grade 6 or above) and be prepared to work really hard to learn to play together with self-discipline and direction.

Costs: Entry to Chamber Music Contest – usually $20pp.  For those selected for National Finale, there may be a charge to cover national administration – the Finale this year is in Christchurch.

Music – Jazz Band

When: Friday 3.45-5.30pm

Where: P1, in the Music Department

In Jazz Band you learn about playing jazz and improvising. Prepare for lots of gigs – at school, in the community – Christchurch Big Band Festival, ARA JazzQuest, cafes/bars/clubs, and prepare for competitions. Check out some performances here.

You must be able to read music and must be learning your instrument for the entire year. Entry is via audition, or invitation. Open to saxophones, trumpets, trombones and guitar. There are no vacancies for a drummer, pianist or bass guitarist in 2023.

The band is also looking for a new vocalist for 2023.  Auditions for those interested (Year 12/13 only) will be held towards the end of Term 1 – details to be advised.

You must be able to commit to the Jazz Band for the entire year.

Costs:  If there is travel to the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival in Blenheim, the cost is around $600pp. This is not guaranteed every year. There may be other opportunities for travel beyond Southern Jam.  Entry to ARA JazzQuest approx. $20pp

Uniform: Jazz Band shirt hire – $25 per year.  Black trousers, black shoes.

Music – Percussion Ensembles

When: Wednesday OR Thursday 8.00 – 8.45am

Where: P1, in the Music Department

We perform in a range of styles on percussion instruments and have fun.

All you need is to be enthusiastic, playing (or have played) an instrument, and the ability to read music is an advantage, but not required. You do not need to be learning drums or percussion, but individual lessons are available at school if you are keen.  Check out some performances here.

Music – Rangi Players

When: Monday 8.00-8.45am

Where: P1, in the Music Department

Rangi Players is a junior instrumental group for students in Years 7 – 10.  All instruments are welcome, and music in a range of styles is played. Check out some performances here.
You need to have your own instrument and have been learning your instrument for at least two terms to join. If you’re unsure whether you are at a high enough level talk to Mrs Kingsbury or your instrumental teacher about it. You must be able to commit to Rangi Players for a full year.

Costs: minimal

Music – Rangi Sinfonia

When: Tuesday 3.45-5.30pm

Where: P1, in the Music Department

Rangi Sinfonia is for more advanced instrumentalists. The group enjoys rehearsing music together and preparing for performances, including prizegiving. There is a camp at the start of the year which is very social, where everyone really enjoy getting to know each other. Check out some performances here.

Rangi Sinfonia is for all year groups – you must be able to read music and play your orchestral instrument to a minimum of Grade 4 level. An audition is required.

Advanced string players will be invited to play in a string orchestra, which will rehearse during the Sinfonia Tuesday after school rehearsal time.

You must be able to commit to Rangi Sinfonia for a full year.

Costs: Rangi Sinfonia Camp approx. $200 – $250pp.  Other costs will be minimal.

Uniform: usually Performance blacks, or school uniform

Music – Rangi Voices

When: Friday 8.00-8.45am

Where: P1, Music Department

Rangi Voices is for students in Years 7-10.  The choir performs a wide variety of music, including contemporary and musical theatre songs, at school and community events, as well as in the annual national Big Sing competition. Check out some performances here. Students need to enjoy singing together and learn about what it means to be a positive and contributing member of a choir. It is not necessary to have singing lessons or to be able to read music, but it an advantage.

An audition is required – you will be asked to sing a verse of the National Anthem, Mrs Charlton will also check your vocal range.

You must be able to commit to Rangi Voices for a full year.

Costs: Big Sing entry and transport – approx. $20pp

Uniform: School uniform

Auditions are on Friday February 3rd before school and lunchtime, and Tuesday February 7th before school, in P1.

Resolutions is generally for students in Years 11-13 only.  There may be younger students invited to audition, at the discretion of Mrs Charlton. Resolutions sings a wide variety of music and performs to a very high standard. Check out some performances here.

You need to love to sing, be willing to work hard with a fantastic group of like-minded young women. An ability to read music and singing lessons are useful, but not essential. You do not need to have been in Rangi Voices.

The group size limited to a maximum of 30. An audition is required – you will be asked to sing a verse of the National Anthem, Mrs Charlton will also check your vocal range.

You must be able to commit to Resolutions for an entire year.

Costs: Big Sing entry and transport – approx $20pp. National Finale for 2023 is in Auckland, so costs are likely to be around $700pp if Resolutions is accepted.

Music – Rock Bands

When: To be arranged – probably Monday after school and some days before school.

Where: Music Department

Rock Bands are for students in Years 9 – 13. In rock bands you learn all the elements of how to play live music, prepare for Rock Quest and learn your favourite songs for a performances during the year. Be prepared to work hard, have a lot of fun and do something a little different.  Check out some performances here.

Theatre Arts – Drama Club

Drama Club is for all students and generally run once a week led by the student Head of Drama. Drama Club is a casual and fun club where anyone can come along and experience drama and improve their skills in a fun and friendly environment. Activities include script work, character creation, games and improvisation. Drama Club is open to everyone years 7-13 and weekly attendance is not required, but is recommended so you don’t miss anything.

Theatre Arts – Drama Productions

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School produce a senior production (for years 11, 12 and 13 students) and a junior production (for years 9 and 10 students) each year. We often collaborate with Christ’s College to do co-productions. In 2023 we will do a Senior Production here at Rangi Ruru and collaborate with Christ’s College on a Junior Production. Information, with an overview of rehearsal times, will be given out at the first meeting of any production and parental consent is required. This is to ensure that parents are aware of the commitment needed. Information sent home regarding productions and events will include the relevant contact details.

Theatre Arts – Stage Angels

Stage Angels focus on theatre technologies, such as lighting, sound and stage management, throughout the year one afternoon after school per week. You will get to learn how to rig, focus and operate lights for theatre. We will also look at sound technology for theatre including creating soundscapes, sound effects and using microphones for theatre. Being a part of Stage Angels can lead to opportunities to work as crew for productions and also to gain service hours working on school events outside of class time. Former Stage Angels work as technicians in the entertainment industry.

Theatre Arts – Theatre Sports

There are many benefits to doing theatre sports – it’s a great way to improve performance and confidence as well as speech and quick thinking there are lots of performance opportunities. Theatre Sports Club it is an opportunity to learn play improvisation games by playing them. Theatre sports in schools is an annual competition for improvised theatre held by the Court Theatre where school teams of up to six perform scenes in games based on audience suggestions scored by judging panel of the Court Jesters. Teams who progress through the heats are invited to participate in the grand final at the Court Theatre.

Adventure Racing

Adventure racing is a team sport where races will extend anywhere from 2 hours up to 6 hours in length. The main activities for adventure racing will include mountain biking, trekking, paddling, navigation, and a potential mystery activity. Teams can generally be made up off 2- 4 competitors however, the main format is considered to be mixed gender teams of four racers.

No Adventure Race experience necessary to participate in this sport. Students just need to be committed to giving it a good go, able to run and ride a bike, enjoy working in a team environment and enjoy a good adventure and fitness challenge.

Athletics

Events: School, Canterbury and South Island Champs in Term 1, National Champs in Term 4

Where: Rangi Ruru, Nga Puna Wai Athletics track and various venues for events

Athletics is a mixture of different sporting events such as running, jumping, throwing and walking. You can choose a few different events to compete in and Rangi Ruru has a running coach who will help you with your training.

All uniform/equipment is provided except spikes. The only costs are for the entry fees of events you choose to enter. You can also consider training with a club outside of school. The school team is selected for the competitions, although participation is not mandatory.

Badminton

Events: School, Canterbury and South Island

Badminton is a game where you hit a shuttlecock over a net to the other player. This is played in a team of four, where you play two games each week, singles and doubles.

Uniform is the school PE uniform but you need your own racquet. It is $30 for both terms 1 and 4, additional cost if you take the school transport. Lunchtime coaching available on demand.

3X3 Basketball and Winter Friday Basketball

When:

Winter Basketball: Played every Friday from 4pm-8:30pm in Terms 2 & 3

Basketball is a team sport where you have 5 players on each team. Each team will run down the court with a ball and try to throw the ball into the hoop at each end. Trials are held for our top senior teams (Senior A & Senior B) and our top Junior team (Intermediate A – Year 9/10 team).  Students can play social basketball by submitting team lists (& individual names) to Miss Hopcroft via TEAMS. 3X3 basketball is modified basketball on a half court with a max of 3 players on the court at any time. Maximum of 5 players per team.

3×3 Basketball is a SUMMER sport for Year 7-13 students so sign-up NOW! Winter basketball trials for competitive teams (Year 9-13) are also in term 1 so sign-up’s are also open for those NOW.

3×3 (Years 7-13) in Term 1:
Games every THURSDAY from 3.30pm onwards in the Rangi Ruru gym. This is a 6-week competition that starts on Thursday 14th February & is open to Year 7-13 students of all abilities. Team lists (& individual names) sent to Miss Hopcroft by Tuesday 8th February. Players must wear your PE uniform, or a Rangi Ruru basketball singlet, and the sub is $10 per player. Minimum of 4-5 students per team.

Winter Basketball (Years 9-13) in Term 2-3:
Trials for competitive teams (Senior A, Senior B and Intermediate A) are held in the school gym in Term 1. Students who want to play social basketball on a Friday night in the Winter can submitting team lists (& individual names) to Miss Hopcroft at the end of Term 1. A Rangi Ruru basketball singlet is needed and you can purchase one from the Sport Office. You also need your own mouthguard. Subs are $90, basketball singlet $77 plus transport. There are extra costs if selected for the Senior A and the Intermediate A teams as you will go to Tournament in Term 3.

Senior A and B Teams (Year 11-13) Trials: Sunday 19th March, 6-7.30pm & Tuesday 4th April, 5.30-7.30pm in the Rangi Ruru gym. ROWERS who wish to be considered must attend the Tuesday 4th April trial.

Cricket

Regional Qualifier

When: Tournament held in Term 1 and training/game every Thursday in Term 1 & Term 4.

Where: Hagley Park

Cricket is a sport which is played between two teams of eleven players who score runs (points). This is done by hitting the ball across the boundary, or by running between two sets of three small wooden posts called wickets. The wickets are at each end of a rectangle of short grass called ‘the pitch’.

Train/game once a week on a Thursday afternoon and attend a Christchurch Gillette or Foundation tournament. Sign up if you are keen to play.

White cricket pants are needed for tournament. Some cricket gear supplied.

Cross Country Running

When: Local Saturday competitions & inter-secondary School Champs during terms 2 & 3

Events: School, Canterbury and NZSS Champs

Where: North Hagley Park and various other venues

Cross country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain such as dirt or grass.

You will need your own running shoes/spikes and a running singlet which you can from the Sports Office. The cost depends on which events you choose to enter, and the transport you take. You can attend running training at school on a Tuesday morning, or athletes may like to consider training with a club. School team may be selected to attend Canterbury and the NZSS Champs.

Cycling

When: Term 1 – weekend rides and Friday wind-trainer sessions (start early March). Wednesday afternoons in term 2 & 3.

Where: Rides leave from Rangi Ruru in Terms 2 & 3 and cycle to Tai Tapu for racing

Cycling is split into 3 races for the school competition – individual time trials where you race as fast as you can against the clock. Team time trials is a group of 3 to 4 (5 for nationals) where you race other teams. There is a graded scratch where you race in a group of people about your level and it is the first person over the finish line who wins. For training you train as a team to learn how to do team time trials.

You will need your own road bike and helmet and you will need a vest that you MUST wear to and from races/Tai Tapu.

Costs:
Term 1 – $30 per person

Terms 2 & 3: $100 per person plus additional costs for attending events and purchasing Rangi Ruru cycling gear.

No experience is needed and all levels will be catered for. Events include Cudon Tour (Blenheim), South Island Champs and NZ Road Cycling Champs.

Dragon Boating

When: Open training starts Wednesday 2nd Feb 3.30pm-6pm at the school pool and Sunday 6th Feb 3-5.30pm

Where: Wednesday and Sunday Trainings at Owles Tce and SISS Dragon Boat Champs at Lake Hood.

Dragon Boating is where you race in a boat with paddlers, a drummer and a steer person against other boats to cross the finish with the shortest time possible.

Years 9-13 only. Entry is dependent on numbers – max 12 per crew. Students MUST be able to swim 50m. Term 1 consists of 5 weeks of training on Wednesdays and Sundays in prep for SISS Dragon Boat Champs @ Lake Rua on Sunday 6th March 2022. Cost approx $40 plus transport costs, additional costs for events. Minimum of 10 paddlers required. Open training starts Wednesday 2nd Feb 4pm-6pm at the school pool and Sunday 6th Feb TBC time. Uniform is PE top and shorts/leggings, singlet supplied for racing.

Equestrian

We have something for everyone, with or without your own horse.

You need your own mount for events, however not required for learn to ride sessions or polo. The cost will depend on the level of involvement. No experience is needed, newcomers are welcome.

Learn to Ride- Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school, all terms

Learn to ride sessions are where you are taught how to ride a horse, and how to care for them. Trained horses are provided, transport to and from school included.

Polo: Thursday after school – Term 1 & Term 4

If you can rider competently you can sign up for polo lessons. These run for six weeks followed by an interschool tournament. Trained polo ponies and gear included, transport to and from school provided.

You kick a ball around a field with 11 other players, and you try to get the ball through your goal at the end of the field.

A Uniform will be provided for 1st XI players. Players need their own mouth guard, boots, shin guards & socks. For 1st XI the cost is approximately $170 per season plus transport and Winter Tournament costs. Social team subs are $30 per person per term plus transport costs.

Futsal

When: Games are Wednesdays between 3:00-6:00pm in Terms 1 & 4

Where: Trainings are on the Rangi Ruru and games are at various venues in Christchurch.

Futsal is the only FIFA and NZ Football approved version of five-aside football and the world’s fastest-growing indoor sport.  Futsal is a small-sided – 5v5 – game played with a smaller (size 3 or 4) low bounce ball, on a basketball-sized court without rebound walls or nets. It is a game that combines fun, creativity, speed, technique, teamwork and quick thinking. NZF Futsal has been designed to complement New Zealand Football’s existing programmes and promote and improve participation in football in New Zealand.

Uniform (shorts and top) supplied but you will require shin pads. Cost $50 per person per term plus transport costs. Minimum of 8 students required per team.

Hockey

When: 2nds, 3rds, Year 9s on Wednesday afternoons in Terms 2 & 3 and 1-2 trainings per week. The 1st XI play on Friday night plus two weekly training sessions.

Where: Trainings on the Rangi Ruru turf before or after school. Games are played at Nga Puna Wai, Nunweek, Rolleston or Marist (St Bedes).

Hockey is a sport where you hit a ball with a stick around a field, trying to score in the goal at each end of the field.

Need your own hockey stick, shin guards and mouth guard. A uniform is provided for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd teams, and the other teams wear their Rangi Ruru PE uniform. Registration & match fees are dependent on the team (between $250 – $350). Players are expected to play every match (even during holidays when required). The 1st & 2nd XI teams also play in Winter Tournament Week in Term 3.

TRIALS (Year 9-13) – All trials to be held at Nga Puna Wai. All players must have TWO trials.

Open Trial for 1st XI & 2nd XI: Friday 17th March, 5.30-7pm and Wednesday 5th April, 3.30pm onwards at Nga Puna Wai. ROWERS who wish to be considered must attend the Wednesday 5th April trial PLUS a second trial the first week of Term 2.

Life Saving

Where: Rangi Ruru pool

The benefits of gaining a foundation in life-saving skills are significant and considered extremely worthwhile at Rangi Ruru. For this reason a number of awards are offered.

Bronze Star – All girls complete their Bronze Star Award as part of the Year 9 curriculum. It serves as an introduction to Lifesaving to develop skills and knowledge of safe water rescue and survival.

Togs and towel required.

BRONZE MEDALLION – Minimum age is 14 years or in the year in which you turn 14. Pre-requisites – The Bronze Star award is an advantage but not essential. All sessions will be in the Rangi swimming pool & the day/time TBC. Cost – badges only.

Metafit

When: Thursdays 3:30pm-4.15pm

Where: Rangi Fitness Centre or School Grounds, all year

Metafit – 30 minutes of bodyweight only workouts consisting of a range of simple but effective exercises that are designed to get you fitter and stronger. This is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which is a functional/bodyweight method of exercising. It is a challenging session for all fitness levels.

Circuits – 30-45 minutes of circuit training using both bodyweight and machine-based exercises.

This is for all year levels. You will need a water bottle and school sports uniform.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON at 3:30pm-4.15pm. Meet Ms Joyce by the Fitness Centre. Cost $5 per session.

Mountain Biking

When: Wednesday afternoons

Where: Varies between Christchurch Adventure Park (CAP) and Halswell Quarry

Mountain biking is the sport of riding specially designed mountain bikes off-road, often over rough terrain.

Please register if interested in Learn to Ride or an experienced rider and the Sports Office will contact you after registrations close. Cost is $30 plus transport and CAP lift pass and/or lesson costs (experienced riders can bike to/from Halswell Quarry/CAP).

Own mountain bike and helmet preferable but bike/gear can be hired from CAP.

Multisport

When: Secondary school events, South Island and National events are scheduled on weekends.

Where: Various venues throughout New Zealand

Individuals can enter the duathlon and triathlon secondary school events.

You will need your own bike, helmet, wet suit/togs and Rangi Ruru sports uniform. Costs vary between $25-50 per person for each event. A Rangi Ruru Triathlon Suit can be purchased for approximately $250.

Netball

When: Saturdays and/or Wednesday afternoons terms 3 and 4

Where: Hagley park on Saturdays and various venues on Wednesdays

Netball is a ball sport with 7 players on each team, the object of the game is to throw the ball in the hoop at the end of the court. Rangi has teams of 10 from years 9-13, social teams are an option.

You will need a rangi netball dress, available from the uniform shop, and navy shorts to wear underneath. Saturday costs between $120-$250 and Wednesdays $40 per person per term. Trials are held in term 1, socials teams do not need a trial. Saturday comp starts end of April and there will be games during the holidays.

Rowing

When: October-March, trainings in the morning and after school 5 times per week in terms 1/4

Where: Trainings at Kerrs Reach, Regattas at various venues

You are in boats of usually 4 or 8 girls, and you race on a 2000m course with up to 7 other crews in your race. There is someone called a cox, who sits at the front of the boat and encourages the rowers, this is generally someone who is small.

Rowing is a sport which requires a large amount of commitment, year 9’s are unable to row in term 1 but can join in term 4. There is a monthly fee of $780 gold sheeted over 6 months plus additional costs depending on where nationals take place. You will need the Rangi Rowing compulsory uniform and you will also need your own bike.

Rugby

When: Rugby 1st XV (combined team with two other schools) – Wednesday games 3pm-4:30pm in Term 2 & 3.  Rugby 7’s is tournament based in Term 4.

Where:
Rugby 1st XV trainings are held on the Rangi Ruru school field and games are played at Burnside Park.
Rugby 7’s is tournament based at various venues in Christchurch.

Rugby is a ball sport with 15 players on each team. The aim of the game is to get the ball across the line at the end of the field by tackling people.

For both rugby and rugby 7’s players must have their own boots, shorts, socks and mouth guard. Tops are provided. Cost is $40 for the season plus transport.

Commitment to all trainings is vital, particularly for new players to learn safe contact techniques.

The “Tuesday Running Group” with Gabi Newman (Rangi Ruru Running Coach), is every TUESDAY @ 7.20am outside the Rangi Ruru gym. The sessions cover long distance (off site) and sprint training (onsite). Extra session can be organised for long/triple/high jump etc. Caters for beginners through to senior athletes.

Ski & Snowboarding

Where: Mt Hutt Ski Field

Skiing and snowboarding are winter sports that involve descending a slope that is covered with snow while standing on a board/skis attached to the rider’s feet.

You will need to be a competent skier/snowboarder to join, you will also need your own ski /snowboard gear. The cost depends on the competition costs and transport used.

Strength and Conditioning

When: Various times all year round (Term 1-4)

Where: School fitness centre and gym

Strength and conditioning is generally for a specific sport, higher level sports team will be required to attend strength and conditioning session with a coach who will provide them with exercises to help them to improve in their sport.

You will need sports uniform/gym gear, the cost is about $10 per session attended. No experience is needed.

Surfing

When: Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30pm in Terms 1 and Term 4

Where: Sumner Beach

A bus will transport the students to/from Summer Beach departing Rossall Street at 3:40pm and returning at approximately 7:00pm. Participants will need togs and a towel but a wetsuit and board are provided. The cost is about $185 for 6 lessons plus transport costs (bus hire). This is a very popular sport (only 42 places available) and students MUST register through school.

This is a learn to surf programme. There is the option to enter in the Wednesday League for students who wish to compete.

Swimming

When: Trainings available for non-club swimmers on Monday afternoons in Terms 1 & 4

Where: Rangi Ruru pool and competition pools in and around Christchurch

The Monday sessions are for non-club swimmers at any level. They focus on building endurance and improving style by using a variety of drills and skills. A minimum of 40 lengths is swum during the session. You will need your own togs, goggles and cap. The cost is $5 per session.

Tennis

When: Games are on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:30pm in Terms 1 and Term 4

Where: Rangi Ruru tennis courts and various venues in and around Christchurch

Tennis is a summer sport where you hit a ball to the other side of the court with a racquet.

You will need your own tennis racquet and school sports uniform.

Premier Tennis – This is our top tennis team(s) & they train twice a week with Remi Feneon (Rangi Ruru tennis coach). Games are from 3.15pm onwards at various venues in and around Christchurch. Tennis dress provided. Open session on Friday 3rd February, 7.30-8.30am on the Rangi Ruru tennis courts for all players wanting to trial for the Premier Tennis team. Cost approximately $80 per person per term plus tournament fees/costs.

Tennis (Year 9-13 Interclub players, can include social teams) – Games from 3.15pm at various venues in and around Christchurch. Teams will be put together after registrations close. Open session on Friday 3rd February, 7.30am-8.30am, Rangi Ruru tennis courts for all players wanting to play competitive Interclub on a Wednesday afternoon.  Must wear Rangi Ruru PE uniform & subs are $30 per player per term plus transport costs.

Coaching – Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning lessons on the Rangi Ruru courts with Remi Feneon (Rangi Ruru tennis coach) or one of his coaches. This is open to Year 9-13 students (all abilities) who want a group tennis lesson (no matches/competition). Cost is approximately $90 a lesson which will be split between the students who register (total of 6 group lessons).

Touch

When: Games are on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:00pm in Term 1 and Term 4
Training times vary depending on the team.

Where: Various venues in and around Christchurch

Touch rugby is a summer sport derived from rugby where you touch the other player instead of tackling them.

You wear your Rangi PE uniform and touch shoes are needed for the Super Touch Team but are optional for other teams.

JUNIOR TOUCH (Yr 9-10 only) – On a Wednesday from 3.15pm at various venues in and around Christchurch. Year 9-10 Just Play sessions on Wednesday 1st February, 3.30-5pm, and Thursday 2nd February, 3.30pm-5pm on the Rangi Ruru field. Must wear the Rangi Ruru PE uniform & cost is $30 per person per term plus transport costs.

SUPER TOUCH (Year 11-13 only) – This is our top touch rugby teams (A & B) and they training once a week. Games on a Wednesday from 3.15pm at North Hagley Park and Wednesday evening in the Belfast Module. Open trial on Friday 3rd February, 3.30-4.30pm on the Rangi field. Strength and Conditioning is compulsory to attend each week. Cost is $50 per person per term plus transport, Belfast module costs and tournament fees.

TOUCH (SOCIAL) – Team lists and individual names emailed to Mrs Sinclair by Tuesday 7th February. Must wear your Rangi Ruru PE uniform & costs $30 per person per term plus transport costs.

Volleyball

When: Games on Mondays from 4pm-9pm in Term 1 & Term 4
Training times vary for competitive teams and social teams do not have to train (optional).

Where: School gymnasiums and indoor stadiums in and around Christchurch.

Volleyball is a summer team sport where 6 people on each team stand across from each other separated by a net. The teams score points by getting the ball to hit the ground on the other side.

You must wear your PE uniform to games and the Senior A & B and Junior A teams are issued a top. Kneepads compulsory for Senior A & B and Junior A teams but recommended for other teams. Games are occasionally played on a Tuesday if the Monday is a public holiday.

COMPETITIVE VOLLEYBALL (Year 9-13 students that didn’t play volleyball in Term 4) – New to school students and/or students that didn’t play in term 4 and wish to trial for the Senior A or B team and/or the Junior A team in Term 1, 2023. An open trial for the Senior A & B teams and Junior A team is on Thursday 2nd February, 3.30pm-5.30pm in the Rangi Ruru gym. Games are on a MONDAY from 4pm onwards at various gymnasiums in and around Christchurch. Costs is $30 per player per term plus tournament & transport costs.

SOCIAL VOLLEYBALL (JUNIOR & SENIOR PLAYERS Yr 9-13) – Team lists (& individual names) sent to Miss Hopcroft by Tuesday 7th February. Games are on a MONDAY from 4pm onwards at various venues in and around Christchurch. Cost is $30 per player per term plus transport costs.

Water Polo

When: Games on Tuesday or Wednesday (between 3pm-9pm)
Senior competition in Term 1 and the Junior competition in Term 4.

Canterbury, SISS and National events each year.

Where: Training in the Rangi Ruru pool. Training times vary – normally early mornings

Games at Jellie Park, Rangi Ruru or Taiora (QEII)

Waterpolo is a competitive team sport played in the water. The game contains 4 quarters in which each team will try to score a goal by throwing the ball into the goal at each end.

Junior competition is in term 4 and the senior competition (open to all ages) is in term 1.
You will need your own Rangi Ruru water polo togs and swimming cap. Water polo caps and balls are provided. The cost is about $100 per person per term plus pool entry and transport costs. The Rangi Ruru togs available to purchase from the Sports Office for $110. No experience needed but a good swimming ability is a big advantage. Teams may enter South Island and National tournaments.

Year 9-13 players. Games every TUESDAY or WEDNESDAY evening at Taiora (QEII) or Jellie Park. Open training on Monday 30th January, 5.15pm-6.30pm in the Rangi Ruru swimming pool.

Open training for new to school and current players on Monday 30th January, 5.15-6.30pm in the Rangi Ruru swimming pool.

Year 7 & 8 KiwiVolley

KiwiVolley is a modified game for Yr 7-8 children which can be played indoors, on grass or the sand.

Canterbury Volleyball runs leagues in Term 1 and 4 which are open to school teams or individual children who will be placed into teams.

Our leagues combine both skills and games – perfect for those starting out in Volleyball.

Year 7 & 8 Basketball

When: Friday 4:00-6:00pm in Terms 2 and 3.

Where: Wharenui Recreation Centre

Basketball is a team sport where you have 5 players on each team, each team will run down the court with a ball and try and throw the ball into the hoop at each end.

Students who want to play basketball on a Friday night in the Winter can register through Mrs Sinclair.

A Rangi Ruru basketball singlet will be provided but you will need to purchase a mouth guard. Subs are $30 per person per term plus transport costs.

3×3 Basketball (Years 7-8) in Term 1:
Games every THURSDAY from 3.30pm onwards in the Rangi Ruru gym. This is a 6-week competition that starts on Thursday 14th February & is open to Year 7-13 students of all abilities. Players must wear your PE uniform, or a Rangi Ruru basketball singlet, and the sub is $10 per player. Minimum of 4-5 students per team.

Year 7 & 8 Metafit

When: Tuesdays 3:30pm-4pm

Where: Rangi Fitness Centre, all year round.

In Metafit you complete 20-30 minute workouts made up of a range of different exercises that are designed to get you fitter and stronger. This is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which is a functional/bodyweight method of exercising. This is a challenging session for all fitness levels.

This is for all year levels. You will need a water bottle and school sports uniform.

On a TUESDAY at 3:30pm-4pm @ Rangi. Meet Ms Joyce by the Fitness Centre. This is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which is a functional/bodyweight method of exercising. This is a challenging session for all fitness levels. Cost $5 per session.

Year 7 & 8 Running Training

When: Tuesdays at 7:20am all year round (Term 1-4)

Where: Meet outside the school gym

The “Tuesday Running Group” with Gabi Newman (Rangi Ruru Running Coach), is every TUESDAY @ 7.20am outside the Rangi Ruru gym. The sessions cover long distance (off site) and sprint training (onsite). Extra session can be organised for long/triple/high jump etc. Caters for beginners through to senior athletes.

Year 7 & 8 Surfing

When: Tuesday’s 4:30-6:30pm, Terms 1 & 4

Where: Sumner beach

A bus will transport students to/from Summer Beach departing Rossall street at 3:40pm and returning at approx. 7:00pm. Participants will need togs but a wetsuit and board are provided. The cost is approx. $185 for 6 lessons plus transport costs (bus hire). This is a very popular sport and students MUST register through school.

This is a learn to surf programme. Options to enter in Wed league for students who wish to compete.

Year 7 & 8 Equestrian

Learn to ride – Keen to learn to ride, or to improve your riding, and who do not have access to their own horses. Usually Tuesdays, but day TBC. COST. $75 weekly includes, coaching, horse hire and transport. Must commit to 6 weeks

Equestrian – You must have access to a horse. Individual or group lessons for dressage, jumping, show hunter. Cost dependent on coach and venue. All can be selected for teams.

Polo – Learn to play Polo (own horse not required). Usually Thursdays but day TBC. COST $95 per week approx, including transport. Must commit to a full term of 6 weeks. All can be selected for teams

Year 7 & 8 Swim Training

When: Monday 3:30-4:45 terms 1 and 4

Where: School pool

The Monday sessions are for non-club swimmers at any level. They focus on building endurance and improving style by using a variety of drills and skills. A minimum of 40 lengths is swum during the session. You will need your own togs, goggles and cap. The cost is $5 per session.
